I don't work here

When I started my career, I quickly realized that there were not many people that looked like me in the field. We had just closed a large deal and we went to a fancy restaurant to celebrate as a team. The host seated us and I excused myself to go to the restroom. While walking back to the table I was waved down by a customer seated at another table. I walked over to see what he wanted and he said..:"could you bring us some water when you get chance?"

"I don't work here" I said and started to walk away. The gentleman stopped me again but this time said, "can you find someone who does?". I didn't know what to say. I was just as confused as he was so I just stated again..."I don't work here" and walked back to our table. 

It took a few years to realize what had actually happened. You see, the restaurant we were in was one of those $$$$ types and usually, people who look like me often do work as servers but we usually don't make enough to actually eat there, so I can see how the gentleman was confused.

I keep moving forward because I am one of the first and when you are one of the first, don't be surprised when they look at you funny. #KMF
